Our Superstar

Congrats to Kellie Williford

We are pleased to announce that Kellie Williford (Winder lab) has received the 2018 Levi Watkins Jr. student award for her contributions to promoting diversity!

 

Kudos to Katherine Rothamel

Heartfelt congratulations to Katherine Rothamel (Ascano lab), the Vanderbilt Prize Student Scholar. She will be mentored by Lynne Maquat, who has received the Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science.

Kudos to Nilay Taneja (Burnette lab) for taking 11th place in the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition!

 

New Support for Chemotherapy Collaboration

The NCI will provide $7.2 million in funding in support of research into the targets of cancer chemotherapeutic drugs by Michael Stone, Carmello Rizzo, and Martin Egli. Congratulations!

New Fellowship Awards

Congratulations to Andrew Hale (Biochemistry, York lab), Corey Seacrist (Pharmacology, Blind lab), and Natalia Kozlyuk (Biochemistry, Chazin lab) for their recently awarded NIH fellowship funding!

 

New Discoveries

Cytokines in the Brain

Erin Calipari and her lab have just demonstrated a role for the cytokine G-CSF in enhancing motivation and cognitive flexibility.

 

Exploring Plasticity in Heat Shock Proteins

New work from Hassane Mchaourab and colleagues reveals the structural basis of the functional diversity of small heat shock proteins.

 

Promoting Insulin Action

A recent report from David Wasserman and his lab demonstrates how blocking nitric oxide production increases capillary permeability, thereby promoting uptake of insulin.

Adipose Iron Buffer

Alyssa Hasty and her lab have identified a subpopulation of adipose tissue macrophages that help to buffer iron under conditions of overload.

 

sc-UniFrac for Analysis of Single Cell Data

A recent publication from Ken Lau, Qi Liu, and colleagues describes sc-UniFrac, a new method for the statistical analysis of complex single cell datasets.

New Approach to RAS Inhibition

Steve Fesik and his lab report novel compounds that suppress RAS signaling by promoting the activity of SOS.

 

Controlling DNA Copy Number

New findings from Jared Nordman and his lab show how Rif1 collaborates with SUUR to regulate copy number in Drosophila polyploid cells.

 

From Stretch to Inflammation

New research from David Harrison and colleagues demonstrates how mechanical stretch can promote monocyte activation during hypertension.

 

New Insights into Diabetic Nephropathy

Raymond Harris and his lab provide new data implying a role for the EGFR tyrosine kinase in the progression of diabetic kidney disease.

NIH Loan Repayment Program
This program provides up to $70,000 of qualified educational debt repayment in return for a 2 year commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research. Applications are due Nov. 15

HHMI Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is seeking applications for the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program, which supports postdoctoral fellows from underrepresented groups. Applications are due Jan. 9, 2019.

Internal Funding Opportunities

Call for Chancellor Faculty Fellows Nominations
The Office of the Provost has issued a call for nominations of associate professors to appointment as Chacellor Faculty Fellow, which provides research support of $40,000/year for two years. Nominations are due Nov. 9. More information is available here.

Cores Development Grants
Directors or Managers of Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences (VBS) Cores are invited by the Dean of VBS to submit proposals for up to $50,000 in funds to support one of the following acquisitions/activities:

  • Purchase of capital equipment costing of less than $120,000
  • Expenses for research for the purpose of laying the groundwork for a new core technology or service.
  • Scientifically driven lab renovations.

Proposals are due Dec. 15. More information is available here..

Translational Research Forum
The first Annual Vanderbilt Entrepreneurship Conference, sponsored by the Owen School of Graduate Management will be held Nov. 9, 8:00 – 4:00 at the Student Life Center.

Discovery Sciences Emerging Scholars Lecture
Luisa Escobar-Hoyos (Stony Brook) will give the next Emerging Scholars lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 13 in 206 PRB. See flyer for details.

Corporate and Foundation Funding
The Corporate and Foundation Relations Office will provide training on identifying sources of and securing funding on Nov. 15, 10:00-12:00, at the Student Life Center (#010B/rooms 1&2).

VCAR Science Day

NAS Study Briefings
Mark your calendar for a special event on Monday, November 26 in 208 Light Hall. Frazier Benya (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine) and Vicki Magley (University of Connecticut) will brief faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows on “Consensus Study Report on Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequenses in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.”

Vanderbilt Winter Showcase
The first Vanderbilt Winter Showcase, to be held Dec. 13 at 6:00 PM (location pending), will feature performers, singers, artists, and spectators from the Vanderbilt Biomedical Community. All are welcome.

New HTS Core Service! Instrument Repair, 3D Printing
The Vanderbilt High-Throughput Screening core now provides engineering services, including instrument repair and design and fabrication of scientific instrumentation. Featuring FDM and high-resolution SLA 3D printing, laser cutting, casting ad CNC machining, HTS engineering can help you design and build custom sample holders, cell plates, microfluidic devices, microscope slides and enclosures as well as the electronics and software to control them. New SOPs for Major IT Jobs Available
The Dean’s Office has outlined new standard operating procedures for planning and execution of major information technology projects.

Call for University Course Proposals
The Office of the Provost has issued a call for proposals for University courses to enable faculty to introduce and teach innovative courses to students from across each of the schools and colleges. Proposals are due Nov. 12. More information is available here.

S10 Grant Reporting
All faculty are reminded of the importance of properly citing NIH shared instrumentation grant (S10) support in any publications of research that employed instrumentation acquired with S10 support.  This includes research involving VU and/or VUMC core facilities that have received such support — the Core directors are more than happy to provide you with the grant number to cite.  Appropriate citations should be made in the actual research paper when the paper is reported to NIH at “My NCBI”, and upon submission of the paper to PubMed Central.

Faculty who would like to promote their research and expertise through The Conversation, an independent news and research website, should contact Erin Facer. For a nice example, see this recent article by Brian Bachmann (Chemistry).
