Quiet and Collaborative Library Space Policies
Our commitment to supporting diverse learning and studying needs is reflected in our noise level policy, which ensures a harmonious and productive atmosphere within the library. At Peabody Library, we have created quiet spaces and collaboration spaces to cater to the needs of those who need to study, learn, and conduct research. Our dedication to accommodating a wide range of learning and studying requirements ensures that diverse studying, learning, and research needs are met.
Quiet Zones
Locations:
- Grand Reading Room
- Fireside Reading Room
Quiet spaces are designated for individual study, research, reading, and quiet contemplation. These spaces are intended for those who require a noise-free environment for focused work. Users are expected to adhere to the following rules:
- Maintain silence: Conversations, phone calls, and noisy activities are not permitted in quiet spaces.
- Set devices to silent/low volume mode: To avoid disruptions, all electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, must be silenced or set to low volume.
- Respect personal space: Ensure a comfortable distance from others to minimize disturbances.
- Limit food and drink: Only covered containers with non-disruptive non-fragile snacks and beverages are allowed. Users are encouraged to use the Café area & patio as designated eating areas for full meals.
- Clean up after use: Users are responsible for tidying up the space and returning tables and chairs to their proper places.
Collaborative & Conversation Zones

- Learning Commons Computer Lab, Room 304
- Peabody Library Café Patio
- Curriculum Materials Center + Youth Collection
- Design Studio
Collaborative spaces are designed for group work, discussions, interactive learning, or individuals seeking ambient noise while studying. Please keep technology use considerate to others who are sharing the space. Users are encouraged to follow these guidelines:
- Maintain a reasonable noise level: While conversation and group work are allowed, users should be considerate of others in the vicinity and avoid excessive noise. Wear headphones when listening to audio and video.
- Limit food and drink: Only covered containers with non-disruptive snacks and beverages are allowed. Users are encouraged to use the Café area & patio as designated eating areas for full meals.
- Clean up after use: Users are responsible for tidying up the space and returning tables and chairs to their proper places.
Noise Zones
The library may designate specific areas as “noise zones,” indicating the acceptable noise level within these spaces. Users should adhere to these guidelines to ensure a balanced environment for both quiet and collaborative study.
