Heard Libraries add The Athletic to free ‘New York Times’ access

Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff who enjoy free online subscriptions to The New York Times courtesy of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries can now access The Athletic and fully access Games alongside other features. 

With expanded access, readers can get in-depth, personalized sports journalism from The Athletic, as well as play Spelling Bee, Wordle, The Crossword and more in Games without limitations. Vanderbilt subscribers already have full access to popular sections of the Times site, including News, Cooking, and Wirecutter. 

To start or renew your FREE subscription: 

  • Search for and select “Vanderbilt University.” You will be redirected to the New York Times registration page. 
  • If you have previously registered your @vanderbilt.edu email address, click the “Already have an account? Log in here” link. 
  • Verify your account. You will receive a confirmation email and must click the link in this email to complete registration. (Please note that the confirmation email may be routed to your spam folder.) 

Account holders also have full access via The New York Times smartphone app for both iOS and Android.  

Once registered, Vanderbilt users will have four years of full access at nytimes.com. After that period, faculty and staff may renew their free subscriptions. Student access will continue to be valid until Dec. 31 of the graduation year they select upon creating their accounts.  

To cancel your PAID New York Times subscription and use Vanderbilt’s free program: 

  • Go to help.nytimes.com and select “Cancel Your Subscription” from the menu, or call 1-800-698-4637.  
  • Once your paid subscription is canceled, clear your internet browser cache. 
  • Next, go to accessnyt.com and search for and select “Vanderbilt University.” 
  • Follow the instructions listed above to complete your free registration.
