Update from Vanderbilt Pharmacy and the Department of Infection Control and Prevention about the Nationwide Meningitis Outbreak
Yesterday, Ameridose LLC., a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility partially owned by one of the individuals who also co-owns the New England Compounding Center, the compounding pharmacy at the center of the nationwide meningitis outbreak, voluntarily halted operations so that Massachusetts state inspectors could monitor processing procedures at the Ameridose facility. There has been no product recall and there have been no adverse issues reported with products produced by Ameridose. Flulapalooza to be Oct. 17 and 18, additional volunteers needed
Additional volunteers are needed Oct. 17 and 18 to assist with this year's Flulapalooza, where Vanderbilt University and Medical Center faculty, staff, students and volunteers can quickly receive their flu vaccination during a mass flu vaccination plan. Flulapalooza will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Thursday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in a large tent erected between Light Hall and Veteran's Administration Hospital. Heart Walk raises spirits, funds for fight against disease
The skies cleared and the sun shone on the 2012 Nashville Heart Walk that took place on Vanderbilt's campus on Saturday. The rain stopped and cool temperatures prevailed as thousands of walkers, and their beloved pets, took to the streets to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Although money continues to trickle in to the local AHA offices, administrators said that the Heart Walk drew nearly 14,000 people and raised more than $1.7 million, representing an increase of more than $50,000 from last year. Pneumonia vaccine for children to be tested in older adults
Vanderbilt is taking part in a national study to test in older adults the use of a vaccine designed to protect children against a common cause of pneumonia. The Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program is recruiting 147 adults older than 55 to participate in the study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that will compare two different dosage levels of a "conjugate version" of the vaccine to protect against streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus.
