On May 12th, the MSTP Outreach Committee coordinated the annual Mini-MSTP. More than 60 children from 8 Dickson County elementary schools participated in the event on Vanderbilt’s campus, which highlighted physician-scientist experiences and educated students about physician-scientist career paths. The event included multiple stations related to medicine and science. Stations were led by MSTP students and covered 5 different topics: engineering (creating thumb “prosthetics”), genetics (strawberry DNA extraction), anatomy (organ recital), physiology and medical imaging (physical exam and ultrasound), and scientific knowledge (Jeopardy-style trivia). Students received a commemorative MD-PhD training certificate at the end of the day and were eager to return for more! The Vanderbilt MSTP is grateful to the Zachary Scott Jones Foundation for their financial contribution to the mini MSTP in honor of MSTP student Zach Jones who was dedicated to improving the lives of children.
