In the mid 90's, after returning from an American Theological Library Association conference, Anne Womack, a librarian at Vanderbilt University Divinity School Library, began work on a website that would provide an online version of lectionary readings. In an email to Bill Hook, the director of the Divinity Library, she expressed her vision... "in addition to the full text, images of religious art are provided for each lectionary week. Unique
backgrounds have been created for each lection reading.
The purpose of this project is twofold; to provide reference and resource access over the Internet,
and to provide an opportunity for spiritual reflection." Though it soon became clear that Anne's vision could not be fully realized because of technological shortcomings, a site was announced in April of 1996. A new version was introduced in 1999 and quickly became the most heavily used site on the library server. Changes and enhancements have continued as users have become more technologically comfortable and have made requests for improvements from a daily lectionary to more mobile-friendly versions.
