This thesis explores how, through the adoption of performative art identities (especially that of the Harlequin), Mirza Sheikh I’tesamuddin and Mirza Abu Taleb Khan were able to produce an ambivalence and hybridity, as defined by Homi Babha, that subverted English hegemony and Orientalism.
