Donate Life America Honors Epic with 2025 James S. Wolf, M.D., Courage Award for Innovative MyChart Donor Registration

Richmond, VA – [November 24, 2025] – Donate Life America (DLA) is proud to present its prestigious 2025 James S. Wolf, M.D. Courage Award to Epic, the electronic health record company and creator of MyChart, in recognition of the company’s groundbreaking MyChart organ, eye, and tissue donor registration program launched in May 2025.

“Donate Life America is grateful to Epic for their courage, creativity, and compassion,” said David Fleming, President & CEO of Donate Life America. “By embedding donor registration into MyChart, Epic is transforming the willingness and generosity to donate into lifesaving action.”

Courage and Innovation in Service of a Lifesaving Mission

Named for transplant surgeon and Donate Life America founder Dr. James S. Wolf, the Courage Award recognizes individuals or organizations outside the professional transplant community who demonstrate exceptional leadership and bold action in advancing donation. Epic’s collaboration with DLA to integrate donor registration directly into MyChart exemplifies this spirit of courage and innovation.

A Seamless, Trusted Pathway to Say “Yes”

100,000 people are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. There is no transplantation without the generosity of organ, eye and tissue donors.

Through MyChart, adults in the United States can now register their decision to become organ, eye and tissue donors directly within their patient portal (desktop or mobile), creating a seamless and private way to take this lifesaving step.

When a patient registers as an organ donor through MyChart, that decision remains private and is not visible to their care team. Only donation professionals have access to this information through the National Donate Life Registry, and only when needed to honor the patient’s decision at the time of their death.

“We’re proud to play a part in making organ donor registration easier and more accessible,” said Seth Howard, EVP of R&D at Epic. “For patients who choose to become donors, taking that step could one day save a life.

Since May 2025, more than 75,000 patients across 150 health systems have used MyChart to complete their donor registration. MyChart registrations have accounted for more than half of all National Donate Life Registry donor registrations this November.

“As a living donor, I’ve seen firsthand how life-changing organ donation can be — and the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the transplant process,” said Tommy Pierre, who leads customer success for Epic’s transplant team. “It’s an honor to be a part of this community and to help advance organ donation across the country.”

More than 180 million patients in the U.S. actively use MyChart. Health systems nationwide are making the new donor registration feature available on a rolling basis.
