Angela Xiao, Ph.D.
Angela Ziyan Xiao is a postdoctoral scholar in marketing department at the Owen Graduate School of Management, where her research explores the psychology of consumer decision-making: from how people set goals and sustain motivation to why they sometimes fall short. Her work examines the intricate ways consumers predict, plan, and pursue goals, shedding light on the tension between our best intentions and everyday behavior.
Originally from China, Angela earned her Ph.D. in Marketing from Carnegie Mellon University, where she studied consumer goals and motivation under the mentorship of Professors George Loewenstein, Russell Golman, and Joy Lu. Her graduate journey began amid pandemic challenges and international transitions, experiences that deepened her appreciation for persistence, curiosity, and resilience; themes that continue to guide her research today.
At Vanderbilt, Angela collaborates with Professors Eric VanEpps, Kelly Haws, Jackie Silverman, and Eric Park in a vibrant and supportive research community. She is particularly interested in how consumers navigate self-control, social influence, and impression management in the pursuit of their goals.
Outside of research, Angela enjoys rock climbing, board games, exploring Nashville with her boyfriend, and spending time with their puppy.
