Opening Reception
In collaboration with the Office of Diversity, the Eskind Biomedical Library hosted an opening reception for the exhibit on April 16, 2015. The program included brief remarks from the individuals below, and included tributes to Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr., Dr. Matthew Walker, and Dr. Claude Organ, as well as remarks about the legacy of African American surgeons at Vanderbilt, the history of the aorta clamp designed by Vivien Thomas, and Dr. Watkins’ role in the development of the traveling exhibit. Dr. Watkins, who was also originally scheduled to speak at the event, passed away on April 11.
