VUMC observes Thank a Resident Day tomorrow

Students at the School of Medicine and others at VUMC will observe Thank a Resident Day on Friday, Feb. 26.

The students, with the help of national  organizations the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Kern National Network, will be providing individually wrapped coffee, tea and caffeinated chocolates to the residents and fellows, which will be made available in the House Staff lounge throughout the day Friday.

“Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions they will not be able to hand them out themselves or do any of the more personal ideas they hoped for, but want to make sure the residents know how much they are loved and appreciated by the medical students,” said Katherine M. Anderson, MA, Program Manager in the Office of Medical Student Affairs.

“Although it’s important to thank residents for the many hours they devote to patient care daily, this is really about taking the time to thank them for choosing the profession of medicine, for making a commitment to their own development, and for making time sacrifices so that they can learn to provide the best, innovative care for us and our loved ones in the years to come,” said Kyla Terhune, MD, MBA, associate professor of Surgery, Vice President for Educational Affairs for Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education for Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

“We are thankful, and we probably won’t realize how thankful we are until these residents and fellows are the physicians and surgeons for us and our families — which is not too far off in the future.  This is a great time to remember to pay that thanks forward,” she said.
