The importance of getting your flu vaccine

Over the last year, we have been inundated with information about the importance of vaccination and prevention. The same holds true for the influenza disease, also known as flu. The best way to reduce the risk of getting and spreading the flu is by receiving the flu vaccination.

VUMC faculty and staff have several options for receiving their flu vaccine.

  • Visit the Medical Center East E-Pod Breakroom. Walk-in services are available 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday -Friday.

  • Visit the Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) locations on the Nashville campus (Monday-Friday, 7:00 am-4:00 pm) or at One Hundred Oaks (Thursdays, 8:00 am-11:30 am).

  • To receive a flu vaccine at Vanderbilt Wilson County, Vanderbilt Bedford and Vanderbilt Tullahoma Harton, please reach out to your respective Occupational Health resource at your location.

  • Utilize the Peer Vaccination Program, which enables eligible staff members to vaccinate their coworkers.

  • Take advantage of our “OHC Comes to You” program to request a departmental onsite event.

For those working remotely, flu vaccination can be obtained at convenient locations in the community, including the Vanderbilt Health Walk-in Clinics or Vanderbilt Health Clinics at Walgreens. Reporting your documentation from a flu vaccine obtained outside Occupational Health or the Peer Vaccination Program can be done securely online using this LINK

“Flu is a respiratory illness that impacts millions of Americans each year. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, especially among young children, adults 65 years and older, and adults living with a chronic health condition,” shares Lori Rolando, MD, MPH, Director of Occupational Health Clinic.  “However, in addition to helping to prevent infection, flu vaccinations are also shown to reduce your risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and even death. Not only are you protecting yourself, but you are also reducing the risk for others that are more susceptible to illness.”

Flu vaccines can take up to two weeks after being administered to provide full protection, so it is recommended to obtain it by the end of October to ensure the greatest protection throughout the entire flu season. For VUMC faculty and staff, the deadline for flu vaccination or approved flu exemption is December 1st.

Protect yourself and others from the flu by receiving your flu vaccination at the above locations or utilizing one of the offered programs. You can receive a flu shot at the same time as other vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine, or at any interval before or after. For more information about the flu and FLUla-2-Uza, visit the OHC Influenza Vaccine site.
