eStar update: Retirement of eGFR-AA

As of July 8, the eGRF-AA will no longer be reported using historical calculation. This change is necessary to remove race in the estimation of kidney function (now widely accepted that race is a social — not biologic — construct).

A new calculation for estimation of kidney function will replace eGRF-AA.

Clinicians should use dot phrase “EGFRCHANGEPATIENTINFO” to ensure patients (via My Health at Vanderbilt) see the following SmartPhrase to explain the change:

“You may have been following your percent kidney function, or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), over time. We have updated our formula for estimating kidney function, and you may notice a slight change in your estimated kidney function. However, this change neither affects your actual kidney function nor impacts your care negatively in any way. If you have any questions about this change, please do not hesitate to reach out to your providers.”

The SmartPhrase is intended for patients in the event of concerns/confusion regarding eGFR-AA no longer being resulted in eStar or My Health at Vanderbilt.
