eStar updates and changes
AABB Changes for Type and Screen
To comply with regulatory changes from AABB, it is no longer acceptable to collect Type & Screen (T&S) samples for blood transfusions from patients new to VUMC without electronic positive patient identification (PPID, i.e. using an armband and scanner).
This regulatory change goes into effect September 14 and impacts all eStar users who order or collect T&S samples (including clinicians and nurses) for blood transfusions.
The update affects collection of T&S samples for blood transfusions in all areas where electronic PPID is not utilized, including:
-
Inpatient and outpatient (primary change impact will be to outpatient clinics)
-
Adult and pediatric
-
Includes: VICC, VCH, DOT, peri-op, OB, walk-in clinics, etc.
For T&S samples collected without electronic PPID AND no historical blood type:
-
Blood Bank will perform testing and immediately expire the result
-
Patient will require second T&S sample to be collected
-
Outpatient areas: eStar will automatically default second T&S (will be part of General OP Blood SmartSet; in Outpatient Recurring Blood Treatment Plan)
-
VUH Adult Peri-OP: clinicians will be reminded with Best Practice Alerts (BPA) to order another specimen
See Tip Sheet “Identifying and Collecting Non-Historical Type and Screen- Outpatient” (available in Hubbl) for more information.
There is an effort to build electronic PPID capability as long-term solution.
Seeing Lab Results in a New Tab of Chart Review
Beginning September 16, a new tab new tab (Lab Results) will be available in Chart Review. The new tab contains patient’s test results in one location, is available for both inpatient and outpatient, and will help improve the clinician experience.
Clinicians can:
-
See results of ordered tests
-
Can hover over to see reference ranges
-
Columns have been renamed and rearranged for clarity
The original Labs tab remains so clinicians can continue to see labs as before.
See Tip Sheet “Seeing Lab Results in a New Tab in Chart Review” (available in Hubbl) for more information.
Customized Lab Alerts
Beginning September 16, the “Rules Studio” will be available. This new feature will help improve the clinician experience with customized lab alerts that fit their workflow.
Clinicians can search for Alert Rules Studio and:
-
Select patient in tool
-
Add lab for custom notification for this patient
-
Favorite rules
-
Enable and disable pager alerts and out of office
See Tip Sheet “Configuring Customized Alerts for Labs with Rules Studio” (available in Hubbl) for more information.
Documenting Discharge in VCH
Beginning September 16, attending clinicians in VCH who are attesting a discharge summary must select discharge coordination time. This will help prevent revenue loss when a clinician spends more than 30 minutes in discharge coordination.
The VCH clinician should select time spent on the patient’s care unit in preparation and execution of hospital discharge:
-
30 minutes or less
-
More than 30 minutes
See Tip Sheet “Documenting Discharge Coordination Time-Children's Hospital” (available in Hubbl) for more information.
Disruption to OPWB Corrected
A recent disruption on the Outpatient Whiteboard (OPWB), which caused patient appointments or cases for the current day to display incorrectly, has been corrected.
Adding BMI to Pediatric Provider and Nursing Storyboards
Beginning September 16, the BMI for pediatric patients will be listed along with the height, weight, pulse, temperature, and respiratory data.
To ensure BMI's accuracy in Storyboard, the patient's height and weight must have been documented within these specific intervals:
-
The patient's height must have been documented and measured within the last 30 days
-
The patient's weight must have been documented and scaled within the last 7 days
