eStar update: Pilot of Nicardipine infusion titrations
Beginning Oct. 2, 2019, a VUMC-wide pilot of a new infusion titration format for nicardipine infusion (which only affects titration allowed" dosing) will go into effect. The pilot will help respond to discoveries from the most recent Joint Commission Survey regarding documentation discrepancies and determine best practice for nursing and pharmacy workflows,
All clinical users that enter or administer nicardipine infusions for titration will be impacted by the pilot. The new workflows will:
- Prompt clinician to actively enter the starting dose rather than accepting default value
- Allow changes to titration instructions that will not create new order. but will update current order (avoids multiple orders on MAR and subsequent nurse reconciliation)
- Avoid unnecessary pharmacy re-dispense of infusion
- Support barcode scan integrity with bags that are already delivered to nursing unit

The pilot will be evaluated for one (1) month and will move forward based on feedback.
