eStar updates and changes announced

Additional Restrictions on Order Modes

On Oct. 30, additional restrictions regarding order entry will go into effect. These restrictions build on system changes that were implemented in October 2018. Analysis showed that there are continued uses of “within clinical scope” for actions that require provider initiation (e.g., nurses ordering medications, laboratory tests or imaging).

These restrictions will help ensure that staff practice within the scope of their professional role and a provider co-signature is prompted when appropriate. Restrictions will affect the “within clinical scope” mode. The changes will also impact the “lab recollect” and “flu/pneumococcal vaccine” modes if labs or vaccines that require a provider order are entered using those modes.

Please view Tip Sheet “Order Mode Restrictions” for more information. There is also a short video available that reviews the proper use of the “within clinical scope” mode: https://spark.adobe.com/video/HT7qHG5pB7l1p.

Removal of “Continue All” Button in Med Rec Navigator

In accordance with the recommendation of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), as well as the VUMC Medication Use Improvement and Pharmacy, Therapeutics and Diagnostics Committees, the option to perform bulk actions to continue or resume medications in the medication reconciliation navigators in eStar has been removed.

This removal is intended to help increase patient safety, and affects the Admission, Transfer and Discharge medication reconciliation navigators. Prescribing clinicians will need to look at each medication individually, instead of clicking a single button to resume all orders.

Please view Tip Sheet “Removing Continue All Button from Medication Reconciliation Process” for more information.

SANE Documentation Process

To improve patient safety, best protect patient privacy and streamline documentation for patients during a particularly sensitive time, a new consult and documentation process for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) team will be available on Oct. 30, 2019.

This new process will impact all clinical users that place consult orders for SANE, interact with the SANE team and the SANE team itself. Changes include an updated process for placing consult order for SANE team and an updated documentation process for SANE team members.

Please view the Quick Start Guide “Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner” (available in Hubbl).

Provider Photos Visible in My Health at Vanderbilt

Beginning Oct. 30, provider photos will be visible in My Health at Vanderbilt. These same photos will appear in Hyperspace in the Secure Chat and Staff Directory features.

Photos will be identical to the ones available on VanderbiltHealth.com, which are pulled from VUMC’s Provider Finder Directory (aka Accurate Provider Database). Providers can request updates to the Provider Finder Directory at: https://apd.mc.vanderbilt.edu/.
