A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The flu continues to be big news nationwide, and William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, continues to tirelessly give interviews to educate the public about the flu. Among recent ones:

  • ABC News’ “Good Morning America” broadcast a piece about fears that the Super Bowl could be affected by flu, and efforts to keep sickness from spreading both at the site of the game and at Super Bowl parties. Schaffner was quoted by name in the discussion after the piece.
  • NBC’s “Today” show interviewed Schaffner for a piece about unusual flu symptoms, including that of a Nebraska boy whose only symptom was hives.
  • CNN and other outlets interviewed Schaffner for stories on adenoviruses and how they can mimic the flu.
  • CNN interviewed Schaffner and Buddy Creech, MD, associate professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, for a story about flu season.

WebMD reporter Kathleen Doheny interviewed Keipp Talbot, MD, associate professor of Infectious Diseases, for a story about her study on flu in older adults. 

NBC News broadcast a piece on Rett syndrome, based around the diagnosis of NBC reporter Richard Engel’s son with the disease. Jeffrey Neul, MD, PhD, professor of Pediatrics, is quoted in the story.

WPLN Nashville Public Radio broadcast a story about Martin Were, MD, associate professor of Biomedical Informatics, and his efforts to establish electronic health records in his home country of Kenya.

MedPage Today interviewed Allen Sills, MD, professor of Neurological Surgery, for a story about head trauma and head injuries in youth sports.
