VUMC in the news

A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Todd Rice, MD, associate professor of Medicine, and Wesley Self, MD, associate professor of Emergency Medicine, were interviewed by numerous news outlets all over the country about their studies, published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, on IV saline vs. balanced fluids for ED and ICU patients. Among the many outlets were CNN, the Associated Press, ABC News, CBS News, WebMD, WPLN Nashville Public Radio, MedicalResearch.com, Reuters and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

VUMC’s affiliation agreement with the University of Mississippi was covered by, among others, WPLN Nashville Public Radio, Nashville Business Journal and the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

Associated Press science writer Seth Borenstein interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about a Facebook myth that the influenza epidemic was caused by the influenza vaccine. The story was picked up by, among other outlets, The Washington Post. Kaiser Health News distributed another story quoting Schaffner, this one about the vaccination rates among hospital employees around the country.

David Harrison, MD, Betty and Jack Bailey Professor of Cardiology, is quoted in a Science magazine story about targeting immune cells to treat hypertension.
