A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The New York Times published a major story quoting Josh Denny, MD, professor of Biomedical Informatics and Medicine and director of the Center for Precision Medicine, about the Science study he co-authored that found a way to search genetic data in electronic health records to identify undiagnosed genetic diseases in large populations so treatments can be tailored to the actual cause of the illness.

Science News reporter Tina Saey and MedPage Today reporter Salynn Boyles also interviewed Denny, and GenomeWeb picked up the story as well.

CNN posted an essay by Wes Ely, MD, Grant W. Liddle Professor of Medicine and Critical Care, "What happens when a patient says, 'Doc, help me die?'" 

A HealthDay News story, also picked up by U.S. News and World Report, reports that weight-loss surgery may help severely obese teens with type 2 diabetes. William Heerman, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics, is quoted in the piece.

Newsweek science writer Kate Sheridan interviewed Sachin Patel, MD, PhD, director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, for a story about cannabis and neuropathic pain.

Parents magazine published a story on the use of nitrous oxide during labor. The piece quotes Michelle Collins, PhD, professor of Nursing.

Reader’s Digest posted a piece, “The truth behind this year’s record-breaking flu season,” which quotes William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine.

Everyday Health reporter Stacey Colino interviewed Andrew Gregory, MD, associate professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, for two stories about what concussion levels really mean and post-concussion syndrome
