IdeaShare accepting ideas through today on artificial intelligence, predictive analytics to improve patient care, health system

Through today, IdeaShare is accepting ideas on how the Medical Center can use artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics to improve patient care and our health system.

Since the innovation challenge re-opened, IdeaShare has received 104 ideas from 68 colleagues, which have resulted in 1,129 page views, 55 comments and 324 “likes.”

Ideas that have been shared include:

  • Partner with a high profile cloud services company to develop a Patient Personal Assistant.
  • Provide integrated health care experience by using AI, voice and smart devices to connect patients and providers in real time for scheduling, navigation, medication, chart data and more.
  • Read lab results to patients, monitor blood sugar and other critical levels, and notify doctor with note in patient chart and/or call 911, if needed.
  • Auto-populate patient data in electronic health records using natural language processing and auto-summarization.

What is AI?

AI is the use of computing techniques to create systems that learn and reason with minimal, and often no, assistance from humans. In some cases, such as the detection of melanoma in images, modern AI techniques have reached, or even exceeded, the abilities of clinical experts. More generally, AI has proven to be exceedingly valuable in supporting human decision-making.

What are predictive analytics?

Predictive analytics uses data to learn models that can identify the likely outcomes from a particular course of action. This can enable humans to make better decisions.

How can you help?

Participate and share your ideas. No idea is too small, and everyone at VUMC can participate.

Any level of participation – sharing, commenting or “liking” ideas – is valuable, and can be done quickly and easily using your desktop and mobile devices.

Top ideas will be shared with leadership teams for development in fiscal year 2019.

Begin sharing your ideas today, and tell your colleagues to do the same. To get started, visit www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/strategic-directions/.
