A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“PBS Newshour” broadcast a story Friday about veterans who have hard-to-diagnose lung problems. Robert Miller, MD, associate professor of Clinical Medicine, was interviewed for the piece, and veteran Scott Stradley was filmed at Vanderbilt during his lung biopsy procedure. 

Washington Post writer Zara Abrams interviewed Shari Barkin, MD, chief of General Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, for a story about whether children working out at boutique gyms like CrossFit and SoulCycle is a good idea.

 New York Times science correspondent Donald McNeil Jr. interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about the FDA approving the first drug intended to treat smallpox.

 The New York Times reporter Kate Murphy interviewed Robert Labadie, MD, vice chair, chief research officer, and professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, for an independent book she is writing about the cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects of listening.

Newsweek science fellow Scottie Andrew interviewed Stephen Patrick, MD, director of the Center for Child Health Policy, for a story about a study that found opioids were widely prescribed to children in Tennessee aged 2 to 17 and why doctors prescribe opioids to children, if addiction rates are higher in children than adults. 

WSMV News 4 interviewed Ronald Alvarez, MD, Betty and Lonnie S. Burnett Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as part of a report on accusations suggesting Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder causes ovarian cancer.
