Hypnosis has been increasingly recognized as a powerful tool in both medicine and counseling and now has the support of a large body or neurophysiologic and randomized controlled studies. In this workshop we will present the scientific basis of hypnosis and discuss its components, evidence and ethical implications. Our workshop will be experiential and you will experience and perform hypnotic inductions. We will provide cycles of brief lectures on theory and science, demonstrations, and then practice that is supervised by two highly trained and experienced psychologists. The only prerequisite for this workshop is having a sense of humor. This is the beginning of a series of workshops that will be provided for future advanced training if desired.

Who: ALL LEVELS. No experience necessary. This workshop is directed toward those working in medical and mental health fields. CME/CEU target audience includes psychologists, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, mental health counselors and dentists. (14.25 CMEs/CEUs available for APA)

Facilitators:

David Patterson, PhD, ABPP is a professor in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine, Surgery, and Psychology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Patterson has been working as a clinical psychologist since 1983, particularly in the Burn Unit and the Psychology Consultation and Liaison program he created. He holds diplomate degrees in the areas of Psychological Hypnosis and Rehabilitation Medicine. Patterson has run psychology intern and postdoctoral training programs for more than 20 years and has mentored hundreds of students. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1989, and he has more than 150 articles and chapters published in the area of hypnosis, pain control, and adjustment to trauma. His articles can be found in such journals as Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Pain, and the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2010, he released an invited book entitled, Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control, published by the American Psychological Association.

Lindsey McKernan, PhD is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. McKernan is a clinical psychologist and researcher practicing at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and outpatient Urology Clinic at VUMC. She has extensive training and experience in the provision of clinical hypnosis for acute, chronic, and procedural pain. McKernan is currently investigating the effects of a hypnosis program for chronic pain in both group and individual settings
