Tomorrow's Claude Organ Lecture to feature VUMC professor emeritus John Tarpley
The Claude Organ Lecture, sponsored by the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and the Southern Surgical Association, will feature John Tarpley, MD, FWACS, FACS, academic dean of the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons and VUMC professor emeritus of Surgery and Anesthesiology. The lecture is at 7 a.m. on Oct. 8 in 208 Light Hall or via Zoom.
This lecture is given in honor of Claude Organ, MD, a pioneering Black academic surgeon. Organ was a founding member of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and in 2003 he served as the second African American president of the American College of Surgeons.
Tarpley’s lecture is titled "Levi Watkins, Jr.’s Legacy: Surgeon, Mentor, Advocate."
Tarpley attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with Watkins, who was the first African American student to attend and graduate from the medical school. Tarpley and Watkins went on to Johns Hopkins Hospital to complete surgery residencies. Watkins was then selected to join the faculty at Johns Hopkins, building a career as a renowned cardiac surgeon.
