A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

PBS NewsHour reporter Laura Santhanam interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about the domestic importance of herd immunity and flu vaccines, especially among sick children. Schaffner was also interviewed by Fox News for a story about a fourth person dying from Legionnaires' disease in North Carolina. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Resources has confirmed 141 cases involving residents from counties and multiple states. Washington Times reporter Shen Wu Tan also interviewed  Schaffner for a story about a Nature Medicine study on the role of non-polio enteroviruses in the spike in pediatric acute flaccid myelitis cases.

New York Times reporter Nicholas Bakalar and Targeted Therapies in Oncology editor Anthony Berberabe interviewed Xiao-Ou Shu, MD, PhD, VICC Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, for stories about her JAMA Oncology study, “Overall Mortality After Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Men vs Women.”

U.S. News & World Report reporter Ilana Kowarski interviewed April Kapu, DNP, RN, director of the Office of Advanced Practice, for a story about how to decide whether to become a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant.
