A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

New York Times science reporter Denise Grady and Live Science staff writer Nicoletta Lanese interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for stories about two papers, one from Science and one from Science Immunology, that help to explain how measles causes "immune amnesia" and can leave children vulnerable to other infections for several years.

Stat interviewed Xiao-Ou Shu, MD, PhD, MPH, Ingram Professor of Cancer Research and associate director for Global Health and co-leader of the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, for a story about her JAMA Oncology study that found men account for about 1% or less of all breast cancer diagnoses in the U.S., yet male breast cancer patients have a 19% higher mortality rate than females.

“CBS This Morning” and “CBS Evening News” both featured interviews with Javid Moslehi, MD, associate professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, for stories about cardio-oncology and the damage that breast cancer treatment can do to the heart.

A New York Times story about using light to treat skin problems interviewed Brian Biesman, MD, assistant clinical professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, about the eye-safety implications for in-home skin care lights.

WPLN Nashville Public Radio reporter Blake Farmer interviewed Stephen Patrick, MD, director of the Center for Child Health Policy, for a story about settlement dollars from opioid lawsuits.
