This is the time of year when the concerns of the public, and the press who meet the information needs of the public, turn to concern about the flu. William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, has been featured on numerous local and national outlets discussing the flu. Among them:
- The New York Times science correspondent Donald McNeil Jr. and NBC Newschannel producer Erika Edwards interviewed Schaffner for stories about the increase in flu cases. The NBC interview was shared with local affiliate stations nationwide and all NBC programs.
- WebMD ran a piece, Is it flu, or flu-like? The difference matters, in which experts, including Schaffner, discussed important distinctions between a flu diagnosis and “flu-like illnesses.”
- CBS Newspath producer Dana Carullo interviewed Schaffner about influenza season, and also about the E. coli outbreak linked to Romaine lettuce.
- The Huffington Post ran a blog from Schaffner about how full coverage of vaccines under Medicare would help reduce preventable disease in older adults.
- Tennessean and Daily News Journal reporter Mariah Timms interviewed Schaffner about the increase of flu cases in our region.
- HLN’s new program “Across America,” hosted by Carol Costello, interviewed Schaffner about the flu live at 10:15 a.m. Friday from Vanderbilt’s VUStar studio.
- Bottom Line Health featured an article from Schaffner about how to prevent the flu from becoming pneumonia.
- WPLN Nashville Public Radio and WTVF News Channel 5 interviewed Schaffner about Middle Tennessee’s flu outbreak.
David Vago, PhD, associate professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, is quoted in an Inc. story about how to avoid the distractions that can make people less productive and less happy.
Mother Jones ran a piece, There is a whole cottage industry of doctors helping parents skip their kids’ vaccines, that quotes Kathryn Edwards, MD, professor of Pediatrics.
