VUMC in the news

A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

NPR, Health.com, HealthDay, Psychiatric News, The Daily Mail and U.S. News & World Report  were among the outlets that interviewed Gregory Plemmons, MD, associate professor of Clinical Pediatrics, for stories about his Pediatrics study showing an increase in youth suicide attempts. The "Today Showalso covered the story through an NBC NewsChannel interview with Plemmons.

Associated Press national reporter Shawn Marsh and PolitiFact staff writer Allison Graves interviewed Todd Ricketts, PhD, professor of Hearing and Speech Sciences, for stories about the "Yanny vs. Laurel" internet debate and a scientific explanation for why people are hearing different things.

Louise Rollins-Smith, PhD, associate professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, wrote an editorial for The Conversation about potential stressors of amphibian populations, including climate change, decreasing habitats and disease. 

CNN producer Alex Pressberg came to Vanderbilt on Tuesday to do additional B-roll footage of April Pettit, MD, assistant professor of Medicine, as part of a series on medical mysteries. Pettit is being featured for her discoveries during the nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak and her segment is scheduled to air in the fall. Shooting locations included the Microbiology lab in TVC, MICU with a patient, helipad, CVICU skybridge, VUMC signage outside and Pettit’s office.

WPLN Nashville Public Radio reported about how to treat opioid addiction in infants. Stephen Patrick, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics, was interviewed for the story.

Dolly Parton's visit to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital to dedicate the butterfly garden in honor of her niece, Hannah Dennison, was covered by numerous news outlets, including WKRN News 2 and The Tennessean.
