The opioid crisis has disproportionately affected underserved and minority communities. Reporter and writer Sam Quinones chronicles the interwoven economic, political, and neurobiological factors at play in his nationally acclaimed book Dreamland. In his newest book, The Least of Us, Quinones dives deeper into the factors that drove the crisis, and highlights what he sees as the solution to these systemic problems: community.
“After years of interviews, research, and writing, finally, that’s what this national saga has left me with, that the lessons of neuroscience, the epidemic, and the pandemic are really the same: That we are strongest in community, as weak as our most vulnerable, and the least of us lie within us all.” - Sam Quinones
Please join us for a discussion on how the opioid epidemic has affected patients at Shade Tree and beyond and how to tap into the strength of community to overcome the opioid crisis, COVID-19 pandemic and more.
Shade Tree Clinic is a free health clinic run by Vanderbilt medical students to address the acute and chronic health needs of the uninsured community of Nashville. The goal of the Lefkowitz Hour is to provide a unique avenue for interaction amongst medical students, faculty, and house staff to enhance medical knowledge while sharing the complexities of accessing care without insurance.
