A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

 CBS News producer Dana Carullo interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about the CDC investigation of a multistate outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni infections linked to puppies purchased from pet stores. The interview is available to all CBS News affiliates and programs. Schaffner also spoke to CNN for a story about not getting a cold while you have flu. 

PBS NewsHour interviewed Shari Barkin, MD, MSHS, division chief of General Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, about the decreasing number of children enrolled in Medicaid.

Modern Healthcare staff reporter Steven Ross Johnson interviewed Kelly Schlendorf, MD, medical director of the Adult Heart Transplant Program, for a story about her JAMA Cardiology study that found using hepatitis C–positive donors may afford a strategy to substantially expand the donor pool for patients awaiting heart transplant, increase transplant volumes and reduce morbidity and mortality on the wait-list.

Reuters reporter Tamara Mathis interviewed Michael DeBaun, MD, director, Vanderbilt-Meharry Center for Excellence in Sickle Cell Disease, for a story about sickle cell disease patient advocacy.

Gannett reporter Melissa Erickson interviewed Michele Walsh, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics and medical director of the Pediatric Emergency Department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, for a story about cold and flu season. The story will run in the Healthy Living section for the national chain of Gannett newspapers (which includes the Tennessean).

Sayeh Nikpay, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, is co-hosting the Tradeoffs podcast exploring the “confusing, costly, and often counterintuitive” healthcare system. Dan Gorenstein, former senior reporter with American Public Media’s “Marketplace” is the executive producer and co-host.
