Howard Markel to deliver the Leonard Visiting Scholar Lecture, Feb. 6

Vanderbilt University Medical Center Department of Medicine welcomes Howard Markel, MD, PhD as the 2020 John M. Leonard Visiting Scholar.  His lecture, “Helix: The Epic Chase to discover the Structure of DNA” will be Thursday, Feb. 6 at 8 a.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Markel is the George E. Wantz, MD Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine and Director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan. He is also professor of Pediatrics; Psychiatry, Public Health Management and Policy; History; and English Literature and Language.  He was educated at the University of Michigan and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital (Intern, Resident and fellow in General Pediatrics.  He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1993. 

Markel is the author of Literatim: Essays at the Intersections of Medicine and Culture.
