VUMC in the news

A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Health reporter Amanda MacMillan interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about whether it is possible to get the cold and flu at once. Schaffner was also interviewed for a WebMD story about the measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, Tennessean reporter Brett Kelman interviewed Schaffner for a story about a Tennessee resident, Tony Gibson, a father of four, who died less than a year after being diagnosed with what doctors call the human form of mad cow disease, and Boston NPR affiliate WBUR’s nationally syndicated broadcast On Point” interviewed him for a story about overuse of antibiotics. 

 Kaiser Health News reporter Sharon Jayson interviewed Oscar Guillamondegui, MD, medical director of the Trauma Unit, for stories about scooter injuries. Her story was posted today by Time magazine.

U.S. News & World Report reporter Justin Williams interviewed Consuelo Wilkins, MD, MSCI, vice president for Health Equity and executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, for a story about the merger of Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives to become Common Spirit Health and the social determinants of health in signing up new members.

Daily Beast reporter Victoria Albert interviewed Terako Amison, MD, assistant professor of Psychiatry, for a story about using vitamin D lamps and light boxes to treat seasonal affective disorder.
