VUMC in the news

A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

VUMC’s purchase of Tennova-Lebanon was covered in both the local press and in trade publications, including a piece on the Associated Press wire and stories in The Tennessean, Modern Healthcare, and Nashville Business Journal.

NBC News reporter interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about Rockland County, New York, declaring a state of emergency and banning unvaccinated minors from public places amid concerns over a measles outbreak. Everyday Health reporter Don Rauf also interviewed Schaffner about the same story. Time magazine and the Associated Press also quoted Schaffner about another infectious disease story, in which Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin said that he deliberately exposed his nine children to chicken pox.

CBS News interviewed Oscar Guillamondegui, MD, professor of Surgery, about appendicitis symptoms after CBS news anchor Nora O’Donnell had emergency appendectomy surgery.

Rascal Flatts’ addition to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt’s Walk of Champions received coverage from all four local TV stations, (WKRN News 2’s story is here, and WSMV News 4’s piece is here), the Associated Press, and Sounds Like Nashville, a country music-focused online publication.

Reuters Health posted a story on drug shortages at hospital pharmacies that quotes Stacie Dusetzina, PhD, associate professor of Health Policy. Reuters also interviewed Manny Sethi, MD, associate professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, for a story about a study showing that home use of a charcoal-activated bag was significantly more effective in getting patients to dispose of unused opioids after elective surgery.
