ABC News reporter Erin Schumaker interviewed William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, for a story about the World Meteorological Organization’s report that climate change is accelerating – and how climate change could hurt public health. Schaffner also spoke to Health magazine reporter Korin Miller for a story about hepatitis, and the Baltimore Sun, CNN and the Associated Press about flu vaccines.
NPR’s “Morning Edition” featured a story on the polypill study from Daniel Muñoz, MD, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology, that found a single pill containing low doses of three medications to treat high blood pressure and one to lower cholesterol reduced the estimated risk of cardiovascular disease by 25%. Medscape also posted its story and video about the study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Washington Post reporter Lateshia Beachum interviewed Zachary Warren, PhD, executive director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD), for a story about types of autism that welcome physical touch and how to communicate boundaries with children with autism. A 5-year-old Tennessee boy with autism had a report filed with the state about him for kissing and hugging another student.
Nature published an Outlook article on the universal flu vaccine that quotes James Crowe, MD, director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center.
Reuters Health reporter Will Boggs interviewed Christianne L. Roumie, MD, MPH, associate professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the Institute for Medicine and Public Health, for stories about her JAMA study on the association of treatment with metformin vs. sulfonylurea with major adverse cardiovascular events among patients with diabetes and reduced kidney function.
