VUMC in the news

A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Again this week, growing concern about the coronavirus outbreak that began in Wuhan, China, and has now spread to many other countries, including the U.S., has brought numerous members of the national and international press to request interviews with William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, and Mark Denison, MD, professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

A small sampling of a few of the most prominent includes:

National news outlets that noted the death of Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Stanley Cohen, PhD, included The New York Times and The Washington Post.

NPR correspondent Sydney Lupkin interviewed Cassandra Brady, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, for a story about using 50 mg of histrelin acetate (previously approved to treat prostate cancer) to treat precocious puberty patients.

Reuters reporter Tamara Mathis interviewed Shriji Patel, MD, assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, for a story about the association between missed follow up appointments and visual acuity in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

CNN quoted William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, in a story about how a doctor's suicide note prompted an investigation into how he handled children's vaccinations.

Beth Malow, MD, Burry Professor of Cognitive Childhood Development, is quoted in a Kaiser Health News story about the negative health effects of changing clocks for daylight saving time.
