A roundup of a few recent stories from the press about Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The flu continues to be big news nationwide, and William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, continues to tirelessly give interviews to educate the public about the flu. Among some highlights:

  • An Associated Press piece about the uses of antiviral medications to fight the flu. The story was picked up by numerous news outlets, including Time magazine.
  • CNN reporter Mark Lieber interviewed Schaffner for a story about a new case of H7N4 flu in China.

The New York Times reporter Nicholas Bakalar, WPLN Nashville Public Radio reporter Blake Farmer, Healthline, and others covered the Annals of Internal Medicine study on opioid use and the risk of serious infection from Andrew Wiese, PhD, MPH, research fellow in Health Policy.

CNBC reported that fax machines continue to be used in the medical field despite current students struggling to use the out-of-date device. VUSM student Amol Utrankar shared his experience in the piece.

MedPage Today interviewed Corey Slovis, MD, professor and chair of Emergency Medicine, for a story about preparations for on-the-scene treatment during mass shootings.

Blythe Corbett, PhD, associate professor of Psychiatry, talked with Your Health Radio about SENSE Theatre, a theatre research and intervention program for children with autism. The 40-minute interview aired multiple times.
